April of 1865 would start a new chapter of American History when the Confederate Army commanded by General Robert E. lee surrendered to the Union Army. Thousands of men had lost their lives and the Southern States were left with a devastated landscape. Within the same year the Thirteenth Amendment was passed and implemented, abolishing slavery in the United States. African Americans would begin facing the difficulties of receiving their new -found freedom. Upon emancipation, the motive slaves were forced with the deliverance of the known and unknown.
As much as the slaves had dreamed of their freedom, umteen of them didnt know how to react. Should they leave? Should they essay looking for misplaced family members, sons, husbands, mothers, brothers, or their children who may strike been sell to another Master? They had no money, income, education, and without skills.

This was the reason many of the freed slaves stayed where they were for many were born and raised on these plantations. For many, it was the only home that they had known. Therefore, many remained on the plantations moving further from the main offer and were forced into sharecropping. Again they found themselves at the mercy of their former masters. Instead of owning the blacks, they became their landlords and creditors. The storekeepers would extend credit to small farmers for food and supplies on a lower floor the Crop- irascibility system, and in return would take out a lien on their harvest.
