The Novel Ecotopia by Ernest Callenbach

He says that dark bionomics rejects the prevailing world view that nature and its species exist to lot man. Those taking this view gather environmentalists as offering no more than a temporary and ineffective solution to bionomic problems. Environmentalists bewilder a stewardship view in which human beings look at for the environment and exert control everywhere its bounty at the same time, while recondite ecologists deny that human beings have any right to control the planet (Gilliam 66-69).

C eachenbach creates a social club in Ecotopia in which human beings develop a distinct view of their relationship to the environment and put it into practice. However, this does not pixilated that the people of Ecotopia do not make use of the resources available. They do use different resources--the reporter notes that there are a lot of plastics but that they are derived in ecotopia from plants rather than from fossilized and non-renewable resources. These plastics are also biodegradable so they will recycle themselves over time. This is what the Ecotopians refer to as a stable-state system, 1 in which biological resources are used and returned to grow more (Callenbach 83).

William colour in notes that the normal view of human beings as in accuse of the world derives from an anthropocentric view of the universe nurtured by influences such as the mechanistic universe of Descartes and the special place inclined man by the Christian Church:

hristianity has reinforced a conception of humankind as the locus of moral concern, and as the rightful authority over the rest of nature. The attitudes which have emerged from the unholy alliance of Descartes and the Church are, to a large extent, responsible for the present-day ascendancy of the technocratic effigy with all its destructive consequences (Grey 212).

Living systems are temporary, stable, dynamic structures whose material components were beat inside stellar furnaces. Life is one of the many levels of make-up assumed by the world-stuff. . . (Grey 214).

Grey sees the scientific view as offering just ass rich a fraternity to the world of nature as does the animistic or pantheist view that seems more to accord with the Ecotopian ideal and with the ideal of recondite ecology.

For that matter, as noted, the ecotopians themselves make use of nature in most degree. Their favorite material is wood, and they even make their plastics from wood. The relationship they see as necessary with nature is a renewable one so that what they use will return to the soil in time. The difference between this view and that of most environmentalists is not that salient on this score, for renewable resources have been promoted by environmentalists for some time. Tim Luke notes that deep ecology involves principles beyond a new philosophy of nature, for deep ecology also serves as the core of a function of political action groups and movements. This would be in keeping with the salmagundi of political action and change seen in Ecotopia where the organizations of the state and the economy are both developed in terms of how they extend to to the natural world. Luke, like the ecotopians, sees deep ecology as a counter to the prevailing paradigm of industrial civilization, a paradigm in which resources are used and abscond is produced. Luke points out that this waste produced three conservation movements in this century alone, and Ecotopia can be seen as a vision of such a
