Joy Kogawas Obasan tells the story of a Japanese Canadian family living through World War 2. The narrator of these events is Naomi Nakane, a grade school teacher forced to delve into her excruciating a side of meat after the death of her uncle, in order to get under ones skin an answer to a question that plagued the minds of her family: What does it mean to be a Japanese Canadian, and how should Japanese Canadians act? Naomi has two differing opinions on this matter, on the one hand Naomi, at times believes that forgetting the past and rest silent is the way in which one may take the stand resolve. On the other hand Naomi believes that by remembering the past and being outspoken, one can prevent past atrocities from reoccurring. The habit of this essay is to determine which side of the argument Naomi, and Kogawa by extension, finally agrees with.
It is evident that Kogawa believes that although remaining silent has merit, in the end it willing lead to greater torment for the persons involved.
This is demonstrated by Naomis stirred up outpouring aimed at her mothers spirit, as substantially as her inability to properly mourn her mothers passing. If Naomi and her mother were able to communicate in the past, Naomi would not insist upon trying to communicate with her after her death. During this monologue Naomi comes to a realization, her mothers desire to remain silent about the events at Nagasaki came at high a price. This price is evidently the ill fortune of communication, this is demonstrated by Naomis and Stephans passionless adult interactions, as well as Obasan and Aunt Emilys initial inability to tell Naomi and Stephan the integrity about what happened to their mother.
