First Analysis of Nokia-Windows Phone Launch St driftgy
It got my attention the fashion that Nokia targeted two very specific set of countries, deciding to do two rounds of sling. Because of this, I started doing some research to try to assimilate some pattern that can give me a tip of their strategy. As you said, it was clear that it wasnt because the population numbers. In my very short-time research, I appoint some interesting factors that could moderate influenced this strategy:
* Languages.
* High sagacity rate.

Languages:
The first round of launch remind me closure era. These countries (Italy, Germany, UK, Netherland, Spain and France) were some of the biggest countries that colonize the world and spread their languages and culture. These countries also have in common that they use, mainly, the same alphabet. The second round of launch focus on three Mandarin speaking countries (Hong Kong, capital of Singapore and Taiwan), the biggest Russian speaking country (Russia) and one of the countries with more formal languages, India.
I believe that with this strategy they can get find to some languages-specific countries to test devices in small markets before having a global launch. For example, Hong Kong (7mil), Singapore (5mil) and Taiwan (23mil) look more like a focus group that will get them fellowship about Mandarin before launching in mainland China (1,340mil) and Indonesia (238mil). Maybe, they need that time between launches to perfect something new as a language/typing/prediction tool or any other tool focus on fetching the most of each particular language.
High Penetration rate:
People believe that mobile world is getting to a saturation point where iPhone is the last frontier, but nothing more incorrect than that.
