The volunteers entered the study after universe arrested and then chosen at random by the organisers to be either a guard or a prisoner. The mock prison set was in a basement at Stanford University, it was without a clock, views of the outside or colour, this added to the deprivation that the prisoners were made to feel, in the same way as real prisons. The prisoners were treated completely differently. They were subjected to being stripped, deloused, finger printed, blind folded and then given smocks to bear. They also had to wear a heavy chain on their right hind end at all times (even in bed), as if to motivate them of where they were and the oppressiveness of their situation. This treatment would have been the beginning of the transformation into submissiveness and de-individuation, which saw the onset of breaking down the prisoners identity to see whether their reason of self would be compromised.
