Prior to World War II, the United States was largely a male-dominate society. Although first-wave feminism during the early part of the twentieth century had make much to bolster the status and rights of the female gender, women were still wide seen as inferior to their men counterparts. Men dominated the lam place, holding most positions of power. Women were often seen as vulnerable and unequal to(p) without a man. As World War II displace to a close, tens of thousands of women began to flood the work place. This influx in women to traditionally men-held positions saw the rise of wink-wave feminism. Steinbecks tonic, Travels with Charley, takes place during the dawning of the second wave feminist movement. Steinbeck holds many of the traditional views of women that were so car park during the early and mid twentieth century. Most of the references to women in this novel are negative. Steinbeck sees his role as a man as superior to the role of a woman. The author often makes disparage remarks just about women, frequently objectifying them. In the begging of the novel, Unwilling to brook to his wives pleading, Steinbeck rushes out to the dock to secure his ride during the hurricane.
