Chesapeake and New England Regions

Michelle Bellender 9-23-10 DBQ Although the Chesapeake and crude England regions were settled mainly by the English, the peoples economic differences by their crops, social differences by their slavery, and political differences by their forms of govern manpowert touch on how the regions contrasted from each other by the year 1700. The Chesapeake and New England colonies direction of farming were very different from one another. People that settled in the Chesapeake colony were all about wealth and power. As said in Document F by headman John Smith, there was no talk but dig out gold, wash gold, refine gold, load gold. The more money person had, the higher the power they had. Tobacco and rice were the main crops in the Chesapeake region, but tobacco became a huge commodity to the settlers wealth. It became a huge profit in the Chesapeake colony. Everyone started to relieve oneself tobacco plants which created labor problems overtime. It was a colony filled with state of plantation with tobacco to profit from and export to New England. There was a mass production of this in the Chesapeake colony. The difference in New England was that farming was more for them. Instead of mass productions, they went with subsistence farming. They farmed to run their families, not for the profit.

According to Document B the emigrants bound for New England were very family-oriented. The Chesapeake colony however was more for conquistadors and single men who were searching for work and money. In July of 1635 the emigrants that sailed to Virginia had 75 out of 86 total people who were young, single men. (Document C) The next difference mingled with the two colonies was the different substances of slavery. The Headright System was first introduced into the Chesapeake colony. It was a system where indentured servants were brought over to work on plantations. They had their way over paid for them and signed a contract for a number of years.
