Masking Thoughts of Elephants and Americans
Peoples feigns often define who they are. The pretends can become a façade in order to create an illusion of power, weakness, strength, intelligence or omit there of. However, the mask can become a crutch, where unmatched may become reliant on its ability to dissemble their inner truth and there in, lies its only fault. In George Orwells narrative Shooting an Elephant, Orwell introduces a dilemma where he forces himself to mask his own moralities in order to conform to those of the society. He epitomizes himself as a coward, frightened by the societies rejection; he follows cultural standards preferably than abiding by his own. Orwell comprehends that he has contradicted his principles merely to avoid gustation from the natives. Correspondingly, In Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America, Barbara Ehrenreich, masks her real life to pursue the life of ones financially little fortunate. Ehrenreich is a middle-class journalist who disguises herself with the intention to appear as a low-class woman to conduct an experiment; yet, the mask gradually begins to become her reality.
Orwell illustrates his true identity by utilise internal oscillation illuminating his natural morals, but ignoring and alter them for those of the arbitrating community, soon realizing he has become overpowered by his mask. Ehrenreich disguises herself to accurately say the life of overworked and underpaid workers in America. Similar to Orwell, after donning the mask for a protracted period of time the mask binds itself, overriding her individuality. by dint of her experiment, she is able to associate that monetary value is analogous to personalized value.
