In the film Finding Forrester, we attend the beginning, growth and maturation of the unlikely friendship between Jamal Wallace, a talented 16 year old black adolescent from the South Bronx and William Forrester, a recluse Pulitzer Prize winning actor experiencing and observing the changes in his neighborhood from the safety of his top nucleotide apartment.
While we follow Jamals progress through the stages of adolescence in the film, we are also swept into the stages of the relationship between Jamal and Forrester which undergoes a maturation and development which mirrors the characteristics of early, middle and late adolescent perspectives.
In early adolescents, their perspective rests and relies very much on what others name together and their ambiguous definition of self. In the opening shots of Finding Forrester, we gibe cultural shots that define Jamals home, his neighborhood.
